Okay, I’m A Bit Distracted
Mondays is also the day I get to spend in a clay studio at Spanish Village – a delightful artist’s coop in San Diego’s Balboa Park. Working with clay grounds me and, at some primal level I don’t understand, but don’t question, contributes to my writing.
What’s making this Monday different is I’ve submitted my application to become a full-fledged member of the Village, and that means I need to submit some of my work to an art jury.
An art jury is just that, a selection of recognized artists who judge other artist’s work. Spanish Village opens its membership twice a year, and the process is, to say the least, a bit strange.
First of all, Spanish Village offers a staggering variety of art. The list of acceptable media ranges from all sorts of painting through woodworking. Each jury is drawn from artists in any, but not all of these mediums and no jury ever has exactly the same judges. As a result, it’s terribly difficult to get any real ‘fix’ on how they will judge “Originality, Technique/craftsmanship, Design/ Composition, Consistency and Presentation.”
Last time I submitted a variety of work, which turns out not to be the best approach. This time I’m submitting a series of sculptures all done using the same pinch-potting technique, with a variety of finishes or glazes.
The jury date isn’t until June 30, but pottery not only has to be made, but dried and fired twice – so today is about my last opportunity to finish up some pieces to submit. So I’m going in early, and quite frankly, today I’m much more interested in my pottery than I am in my writing. ;)

That’s awesome, Anne! :) I didn’t even know they had a clay studio in Balboa Park. Shame on me…
