The Commute, The Heat, The Celebration…

by Anne Wayman on June 20th, 2007

benem10-31-06.jpgYesterday my 13 year old granddaughter graduated from middle school. The ceremony was scheduled to take place at 8:55 a.m., or so I thought. That meant a 12 mile drive in the heat of the commute… yes, the same commute I sometimes glory in hearing about as I work from home. It could have been worse, but I’m still grateful I only have to do this a couple of times a year.

The graduation took place in the center of campus under wide-open skies. We sat there in folding chairs under the sun, surrounded by school buildings and I hadn’t thought to bring a hat. It got hot! Really hot.

Finally, about 9:15 the school band arrived – my grandson was playing the xylophone and other percussion instruments. Fortunately, they had a bit of shade.

The principal spoke, and so did two kids and a couple of other folks… they were mercifully brief. My son and I prowled around looking for shade, leaving my daughter-in-law and other grandmother in the son to their own devices. Finally we all moved to a table with some shade… we still couldn’t see anything, but at least we were less uncomfortable.

Some 450 kids graduated and each one had their name called. All of them looked sunburned like the audience.

It was great to help celebrate, and Emily loved the books I gave her… and I came home totally trashed, just in time for a two-hour teleclass.
