The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

First Drafts Are Just That

by Anne Wayman on July 24th, 2007

ideabulb.jpgLifeCleaver has a post called 10 tips to beat blogger’s block. Figuring that writers block and bloggers block have a great deal in common I checked it out, and got thoroughly enchanted with the first tip: Lower Your Standards.

Links in that tip lead to Happy Birthday, Anne Lamott at 43 Folders. There Lamott is quoted on the subject of first or rough drafts. It’s worth a read.

Like most of us, Lamott finds the writing process less than smooth. In part she solves this, or addresses this by giving herself permission to write horrid first drafts. But the way she tells the tale on herself is both instructive and hilarious.

Read and Write Often,
