The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Being A Hero For Yourself

by Anne Wayman on September 21st, 2007

Market GateMark Silver, business consultant and writer has a post on his blog called Making your heroic choice. He quotes from an interview by Maya Frost with author Sarah Susanka.

Sarah talks about how she got a book written while she had a fulltime job. Her secret? She made a twice-weekly appointment with herself to write, and kept it. Mark comments that he had to do the same thing to get his book, and I know have to physically schedule time to get my own writing done. As he points out, we freelancers do have control over our own time – that’s one of the major pluses of freelancing.

What hadn’t occurred to me was that making the choice to work on my own writing and not just my clients is a heroic choice.

One of the definitions of heroic is: having or involving recourse to boldness, daring, or extreme measures.

Yep, it requires boldness, daring, and sometimes extreme measures to carve out time to work on my own writing. I love the idea of being a hero to myself.

How do you get your own writing done? How are you a hero to yourself? Tell us about it in our comment section.

Write well and often,

For most of my writing life, I was a night owl writer. Creativity seemed to come more naturally when the world was asleep and I felt like I was alone with the stars.

Lately I’ve been more focused on writing that isn’t creative in nature. When I’m working on copy for a client, for example, the morning hours seem to suit me best.

So, I guess first thing every morning and last thing every night is when I write.

thanks for blogging about this important issue, Anne. I hear people all the time (sometimes me, too) saying: “I ran out of time.” “I have too much to do.” “I can’t get to it.”

And it’s just not true. We’ll all die with our to-do lists incomplete. I realized at some point that I had to consciously choose what I was going to let fall to the wayside, instead of having it chosen for me by random- whichever thing in my life managed to get my attention for whatever reason.

It’s made such a big difference. I sometimes get behind in my email, but I do get things done. :) And, I get naps in, too. ;)

And it was wicked hard to do that for myself- my mastermind had to beat me into it.

Mark, lol… in fact almost rotfl… of course we’ll all die with our to do lists incomplete… love reading that and seeing the truth of it.

getting conscious of what I’m doing seems like more than half the battle… amazing how often I go unconscious…

wicked hard is another great descriptor.

Another half the battle idea is to know we’re not alone…

[…] So I’m going to take it. As Mark reminded is, we are all in control of our own time. […]
