Q&A - Do I Need a Degree?

by Anne Wayman on October 3rd, 2007

Q.gifDear Anne,

My question is simply this: Is a college degree required for any, all, or just some freelance writing jobs?

Thank you very much for your time!

Damon Ortt

A.gifHi Damon,

I don’t have a degree and I can’t think of any freelance writing job I’ve ever been turned down because of that lack.

That said, I can imagine that there are a few, very few, that would require a degree… some will ask for one just as a filter. If I think I can do it, I apply. But once and awhile, I’m sure, the employer wants the “creditability” of a degree to display in some fashion.

Implicit in your question is probably “should you get a degree?” I’d say “not unless you want to.”

Now, do others have a different experience? Have you been turned down because you lack a degree? Have you gotten a writing job because of your degree? Let’s talk about it.

I agree. No degree necessary. Just passion and drive.

Sorry to interrupt, but I have tagged you for a silly little exercise. http://writingfrump.wordpress.com/2007/10/03/tagging-the-frump/

Hey Anne!! First Welcome to the Business Channel! I look forward to getting to know you.

Second, on your topic, I definitely believe it depends. My recommendation to anyone is, that a degree can’t hurt. It is a key to unlock doors many times in our society. Also, it forces the employer to look for another reason to say “no”. As you stated, some people will use a lack of degree to screen you out as a candidate. So I recommend, go get it if you feel like it is hindering you. If it has not or doesn’t hinder you and you have no interest, no worries move forward and be successful. We have countless examples of very successful people who never went to college or quit and started a business!!
