The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

The Easy Promos for Freelance Writers

by Anne Wayman on October 7th, 2007

ideabulb.jpgI’m amazed at how many freelance writers forget to use the easiest type of promo possible, and that’s live links to blogs and websites in both their email signature and on forums.

Maybe it’s just that new people start freelancing all the time. Anyway, email sigs, which I think should also include your phone number, and forum sigs are incredibly easy and free forms of promotion and marketing.

Here are links to three blog entries about this type of promotion and marketing:

  • Your Email Sig – A Writer’s Marketing Tool
  • Take Your Email Sig to the Next Level
  • Make It Easy For Clients To Contact You
  • Write well and often,

    Two newsletters:

Writing With Vision - for those who want to get a book written.

I have to agree. Using my sig more effectively has really made a difference.

I have 15 different random sigs set up in my mail program. Each one is a provocative question, or a “headline”, and a website. Like this:

What are the real tests of our knowledge?

Everyday, I get 10-30 hits from my emails that I send to Yahoo groups and other places. But mostly Yahoo groups, because my emails get the most visibility in that medium.

Whenever I add a new, interesting post to my blog, I add another random entry to my email program.

It’s way, way, WAY better than just putting my title of my blog and the URL. People hardly ever clicked on that. But a provocative question that dares them to click, now, that gets a response. Here’s another one people like:

      Is Homeschooling Anti-Feminist?

People have hassled me about my approach to sigs, saying it’s not worth the trouble. I say Phooey! It’s totally worth it. Takes just a few minutes to set up, then it works its own magic mojo.

Just a small part of the larger guerrilla marketing plan I have. It all adds up.

I had URLs in my previous post, Anne, but they got cut out. Do you see them? Anyway, here’s another try at those sigs I offered as examples:

What are the real tests of our knowledge?

Tammy, how do you get random sigs… I like that idea, but I haven’t a clue!

In my email program (I use the mail program that comes with macs) I can create sigs. One of the options is “use random signature”. Which program do you use?
