San Diego Fires – 5
I had some sort of an emotional collapse around these fires yesterday. I did get out of the house for a while, which was a good thing. But the constant news, which I seemed unable to turn off, felled me. Not badly, but I came home, turned on the air conditioner and went to bed.
This morning I feel human and am getting back into my own routine, which feels good.
Most of the drama is now over. The fires aren’t out, if not quite under control, the end is in sight. Many people have been allowed back into their homes or to their property if they lost their homes. It looks like something around 1,200 homes burned to the ground. Our avocado industry lost 20,000 acres – a major hit. Recovery has begun.
Ash is everywhere and still falling. Air quality is awful.
And the politics have begun… it’s not pretty. The conservatives are claiming credit for getting air tankers in the air – not true; it was the weather that allowed them to fly. The conservatives are also using our incredible and hugely successful shelter at Qualcomm stadium to show how we don’t need government and that folks in Katrina should have been able to do the same.
Overlooked, or ignored, is the fact that almost everyone in the county has a car, which means they (we) have the ability to get out. Also ignored is that we aren’t sloshing around in dirty water. The progressives, including me, are sniping back… so I’ll shut up on this subject for now.
Thanks to everyone who send words of encouragement and prayers and concern.

If you look at the crowds at Jack Murphy, oops, I mean Qualcomm, they were mostly white and like you said, eveyone has a car in SD…and a horse trailer if you’re in the rural areas and have animals.
But I must say the evacuation was handled well probably because people knew what to do after the 2003 fires. Having people stay home from work/school helped get folks off the freeway and between radio, tv and online sources, there was a great deal of info for everyone. (But again, you had to have access, which meant a car or a cell phone with online service i.e., $$$.)
On progressive talk yesterday (Randy Rhodes) she was blaming the lack of firefighting equipment on it all being with the National Guard in Iraq. Interesting. I’m sure there will be lots of crap news and blame in the next few weeks and more in depth reporting in the upcoming months, just like after Katrina.
Bottom line though: Don’t mess with Mother Nature.

I see that you have Dr. Joe Vitale as a link in your site. He wrote:

Do you agree with him that those who suffered losses in the fires attracted those losses to themselves?
