Beyond the Book

by Anne Wayman on December 20th, 2007

book.jpgJust Make Money Online points to a podcast where Jason Van Orden tells how he makes $70,000 a year with his podcasts and blogs. So I ran up freerice.com

It’s excellent, if not earth shaking marketing advice. But it got me thinking…

In today’s market there’s a whole lot more you can do with the content of a book than just write a book! Obvious? Sort of, but for me, at least, I tend to forget about things like podcasts and online video… mostly because I don’t use them much. But lots of people do, and I’m not meeting those people where they are when it comes to my marketing.

That’s slowly beginning to change. I’ve even written an article called Thinking Beyond the Book.

Are you using podcasts or other new media for marketing? Tell us about it.

    Anne,

In this the age of information, broadband Internet and rapidly changing digital communication there are numerous opportunities for thought leader/authors/experts/speakers/etc. to get their ideas and content to their target market.

My book has done a lot to brand me. It’s an awesome business card and lead generator. Then I use podcasting, blogging, online video and my email newsletter to continue building a relationship with my target market.

There are so many channels available to us–may as well use a diverse portfolio of them. Any small section of a book can translate easily into a podcast episode or blog post. You may as well use these channels to attract more people to your message.

You’re dead on when you say “think beyond the book.”

I would love to get into podcasting and video. These are great methods to increase visibility and offer additional content in a variety of mediums. Moving into these fields will require a lot of learning and a little investment. Still, I hope to make some headway in new media during the coming year.
