Solstice and This Writer
I have a tropic soul. I love lots of light; warm weather sparks my creativity. So winter, even as we experience it here in San Diego, isn’t my favorite season. In fact, as the days get shorter each year, I have this image of myself sort of hanging on, longing for more light.
So I absolutely love the Winter Solstice here in the northern hemisphere. I celebrate in one fashion or another because I know it means the wheel of the year has turned and the days will soon be perceptibly longer. And when it’s coupled with the full moon like it was last night, well, I love it even more. I’ll spend the day today not doing much… a bit of cleaning, getting the gifts wrapped and enjoying my feelings of gratitude.
Do you celebrate Solstice? If so, tell us about it; if not, tell us about that too.

Yes! I do celebrate it. I love the idea of acknowledging the natural cycle and I do so with reverence. Usually I celebrate by lighting candles, and writing about the sun’s journey.

I agree with you 100%! Even in Charleston, SC where it never really gets too cold, the long nights and more gloomy days bring me down. My moods are directly related to the amount of light and warmth around me.
We don’t celebrate Solstice formally - no Yule logs or great bonfires, but we do acknowledge it. In fact, our wedding was originally scheduled for Summer Solstice - my favorite time of year.
So, light a candle and keep your chin up, the sun will be coming back shortly. Happy holidays!
