The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Now It’s the Phone!

by Anne Wayman on January 24th, 2008

Argghhh… apparently I had two problems. One with the printer itself, and one with the voice portion of my dsl line. I’d heard some static this morning, but when I tried to use that line to fax, the fax couldn’t even begin to connect.

So, from the same phone line, I call my phone provider who shall remain nameless because they do not deserve any promo what’s so ever. The phone tree was incredibly long and quit before I’d finished. To my surprise hitting 00 worked and I got a truly nice guy. He tested my line, then asked me to get off the phone so he could do more tests.

Well within his promised 5 minutes, he called back with the news that he couldn’t see anything wrong with the line, but (fortunately) he could hear the static on the line as we were talking.

Yes, the phone company is going to send someone out today… sometime between now, which is 9:15 a.m. and 8 this evening! I guess that’s better than tomorrow. Thankfully, so far, my net connection is holding.

Tell me something - why can’t they give you a smaller window? Why do service people in general think we have ALL DAY to hang around at home and wait for them? It frustrates me no end. Everyone does this - from furnace repair to phone repair. I understand emergencies happen and some projects run over, but they ALL have phones and there’s no reason why they can’t call and say “I’m running a bit late - expect me there within an hour.”

    My peeve. :)

One of mine, too… the guy came at about 7:15 p.m…. he was great… and had 2 more calls to make… figured he wouldn’t get home until 10… I don’t know who dreams up a 12 hour window in customer service… sigh… a marketing major on their first job?

Ms. Wayman - I sympathize with the fact that you are writing quickly and probably early in the morning but your posts are quite often full of spelling and grammar errors.

    what’s so ever??? whatsoever
