The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Freelance Writers and the Telephone

by Anne Wayman on February 21st, 2008

ideabulb.jpgI happen to love talking with clients, both old and new, on the phone. But I was reminded that’s not true for every freelance writer when I read CalalystBlogger Jennifer’s post called: The Freelancer’s Guide to Giving Good Phone

Jennifer doesn’t really like the phone, but she’s figured out what she needs to do to use it effectively. It’s a great list and it’s all easy to do. The only thing I’d add is, when you’re going to make an important call, stand up to do it. Just standing up while you talk will infuse you with more energy. Oh heck, there’s one more trick, and that’s smile… not all the time, but when it’s appropriate. Phone pros actually put a mirror in front of them while they are making calls because they know their facial expressions influence how they sound.

Ugh, I hate talking on the phone. Why can’t we all just do this through email?

I like to use the phone. It is so convenient.
People who don’t use the phone leave me
    more folks to call.

Anne, thanks so much for posting this link! I’ve been a phone-o-phobe my entire life and thought I was the only lame-o who had to scribble notes before every call. Whew!

Trisha… a lot can be done by email, maybe even most… Rachel… much as I love to think I’m unique I have discovered that whatever I’m thinking/feeling is likely to be thought/felt by many others… you are not alone!

Once I know someone, I don’t mind phone conversations at all…for me, it’s those sales calls that get me nervous. But there are definitely steps you can take to minimize this. Thanks for adding to the list!
