My rebate check is going into the bank, to be saved for a vacation next year. After eight years in Seattle, I’m planning my first visit back to my upstate New York hometown.

I didn’t get a check the last time the Administration started dividing up the nation’s bankroll and I’m skeptical that I’ll get one this time. Just not lucky with government rebates. I remember what my late father said when Mr. Bush and company sent out letters telling everybody to brace for the money that would surely be on the way any minute. Pop looked at the letter and held up the envelope. “How come he didn’t put the check in this letter? Would have saved millions in postage.”
So…if I do get a rebate (it could happen, I guess), I’m going down to the saloon about a block from my office, slam down the money on the bar and buy a round for anybody in the house who will drink a toast to my friend and progenitor, Morten H. Clausen, one of the best story tellers and clear thinkers of our time.

If and when I get my $600 rebate I am going to donate it to my husband’s new Harley Davidson fund. I feel it is the right thing to do as I have taken over his last bike, a 2007 883 Sportster, which he encouraged me to learn to ride …. Now that I find that I like being at the helm … and he refuses to ride in the back … well, it is hard for us both to ride in front. Plus, with the fuel pricing hitting the roof, and me being the tightwad, I look forward to saving more on fuel by us both riding motorcycles to work.
