What Set of Keystrokes Closes Firefox?

by Anne Wayman on March 11th, 2008

D**n! It happened again. I had almost completed a post here and did something funny on the keyboard and wham! It’s all gone! Okay, I know. Most would tell me I shouldn’t draft directly in WordPress, but I do because it’s fast. At least it’s fast if I don’t lose the post. And sure, I can hit Save and Continue Editing any time, but apparently I can’t do that with keystrokes, but have to go to my mouse, which slows this touch typist down.

And yeah, I know there is software out there that let’s me write and post without ever getting into WP - maybe I’ll explore those, eventually.

Sigh… but probably I’ll continue on the way I usually do, occasionally accidentally dumping a post moment’s before it’s final.

Write well and often,

ctrl+w will automatically close tabs and, if there’s only one ‘tab’ open, it’ll close the entire browser. Thi s might be something you can set in preferences, though.

Honestly, it’s a failing of Wordpress — there’s no reason it can’t be automatically saving everything in real time like Google Docs or Livejournal. I’m surprised it doesn’t.

Alt+f4 also closes most Windows applications, though it’s pretty hard to hit accidentally..

lol, love the name, random nerd… it’s probably ctrl+w and I’m glad you think it’s wonkers too.

WordPress does save automatically, since somewhere after 2.x …not real time, but I’ve never lost more than a few sentences to a browser crash since that update. If you have Firefox resume the previous session, sometimes it’ll recover the missing text as well.
