Borders Bookstores Beta Digital
I was truly surprised when I discovered that one of Borders Bookstore’s 15 new concept stores around the country opened a few days ago just moments from me in National City (adjacent to San Diego on the south). I’m not totally clear on the concept of concept store in this instance, although I was intrigued by the digital center right in the middle of the store.
According to an article in the San Diego Union called Borders turns page on old bookstores, the bookstore chain hopes to take advantage of new media facts like 55.7 percent a year growth of ebooks since 2000 and the huge switch to digital music by making digital accessible and available.
Two young, hip clerks were helpful as I played with a Sony ebook reader and decided to buy a Sansa Clip MP3 player that will also let me play fm radio. I didn’t realize until I got home that the ebook reader apparently comes with a cover which might make it feel more like a book to me. The display was awesome and I wished Amazon would let retailers display the Kindle (sigh). And the Sansa will also let me download audio books. Gradually I’m getting somewhat current with tech again.
I also got a kick out of hanging out with teens and twentys who were happy to answer questions from this grandma in understandable ways.
Will digital centers save brick and mortor bookstores? Not by themselves, but most bookstores will benefit from a well thought out digital center I think.
As we writers learn to add audio and ebooks and who knows what else to our repertoire, we’ll benefit too.
