Angela Hoy, Publisher of BookLocker and Publisher and Editor of WritersWeekly.com, and our heroine who has launched a class action suit against Amazon over the online bookstore’s insistence that self-publishers use their POD printer, BookSurge, was interviewed by Publishing Insiders along with Eric Kampmann, Founder President of Beaufort Books and CEO of Midpoint Trade Books, about the law suit and about the future of Print On Demand, Amazon, and publishing in general.

Book publishing, of course, always goes through changes. We’ve seen major ones as giant corporations that sell oil or cars have bought publishers in hopes of adding to their bottom line. Then computers and the ability to economically print and deliver one book at a time arrived, making it possible for authors to bypass traditional publishing and print, sell and hopefully make money without them. Amazon, the online bookstore has been an integral part of the success of self-publishing.
What Amazon does is important. It’s important to anyone who has ever thought of writing a book, to authors with existing books, and to readers who want access to the widest variety of books as possible.
Frankly, it’s discouraging. Peter Bowerman spoke eloquently about the problem here. As he said, Amazon seems to be totally breaking with its rebel position and moving into an era of what I suspect will be truly corrupting power.
