Do You Worry About Theft Of Your Writing?

by Anne Wayman on June 3rd, 2008

data ebook data pdfEvery now and again someone asks me if it’s possible to protect ebook .pdf files so people can copy them and give them away or even sell them. I tell people that yes, they can and that I don’t bother.

In the interview with Angela Hoy, Jerry talks about what the traditional publishers really fear with POD and Amazon is the lack of control they have over ebooks and books printed via print on demand. They are afraid that if someone like Amazon, through BookSurge, prints books, they, the traditional publisher has no way to verify how many books are printed, let alone sold. They are so afraid of being ripped off they’ve missed the whole pod and ebook revolution. Eric Kampmann, Founder President of Beaufort Books and CEO of Midpoint Trade Books agreed that this is true with traditional publishers.

What I want to know from you is not only are you afraid about the theft of your writing - that’s an easy yes or no poll. I want to know your thinking behind your answer.

For example, I don’t worry about it. I don’t worry about my car getting stolen either, although it happened once. I mostly lock, but not always. I figure that the more people who see my ebooks and print books, the more are likely to actually pay for them. I also don’t want to spend a whole bunch of time worrying about it. I don’t like thinking people steal from me; I’d rather take the view that most people are honest.

What about you? How much do you fear the theft of your writing, if you do, and what is your thinking behind that?
