Are You Writing? Or Are You Just Busy?
Pimpyourwork.com has a nifty quote from by Thomas Edison that notes the difference between being busy and actually working. It got me thinking about the issue.
I don’t know about you, but I can get so distracted by things that might be a good idea, but simply don’t need to be done, at least right now. For example, this morning I started to learn a new calendar program. Sigh. Yes, I’m unhappy with my current calendar program, and yes, the trail download I’ve got expiries in a couple of weeks, but today is not a good day to start experimenting!
I go to clay today and I’ve got an appointment with a new chiropractor, plus some shopping scheduled. A far better use of my time is blogging and working on one of my client’s books.
Why blogging? It’s part of my income stream, and part of the way I’m building a mailing list.
Clay is certainly not writing, but, for me, it’s not busyness either. Working with clay a couple of hours a weeks tends to ground me in a delightful way. Right now I’m working on a big old pot I can use as a fountain for my back yard. I’ll take some pictures one of these days.
Of course, shopping, cleaning the house, laundry and getting medical care is all important and necessary to support ourselves as human beings as well as writers.
So, stop once and awhile and ask yourself if you’re writing or just staying busy?
