When Life Gets In the Way of Writing

by Anne Wayman on July 8th, 2008

I try to blog at least once a day, and often post up to four times. Today just flat got away from me. I did an hour of meditation, but that’s pretty usual. And I start early. I knew I had my two hours at the clay studio, then a meeting after that, and I planned to get some shopping done once the meeting was over.

It’s those morning couple of hours I lost. Part of one was to a spontaneous meeting. Another part was breakfast here at the center with several people. But truth be told, I’m not sure what happened to the rest of the morning… writing sure didn’t.

So what do I do when life gets in the way of writing? I roll with it. Tomorrow is another day, and, at least in this moment, looks like it’s fairly obligation free - meaning I should have time to write. If I don’t write tomorrow, I’ll let it roll again. But if I find I’m not writing on Thursday, which would be the third day, then I’ll look to see what else is going on with me.

What do you do when life gets in the way of your writing?

I’m with you, Anne. Sometimes, you just gotta roll with whatever life hands you. I think it’s a control thing–not everything will go as planned and sometimes there’s not a darned thing to do, but accept it and hope tomorrow will go better.

Or, as Woody Allen once said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.”

Life gets in the way and sometimes I just let it flow. What’s happened has already happened and there’s nothing we can do about it except try again the next day. Sometimes, it’s hard to do this though especially when you’re used to working all the time. Sometimes I feel guilty not doing the work. But what can I do right? I still need a life.

I try to publish a post every day but it’s not always easy to find time to write each day. Instead, I find time during the week (or weekend) when I have a huge chunk of time to write several posts. Then I schedule them to publish throughout the week. Having several posts written ahead of time helps me to focus on writing instead of worrying about finishing an article every day.

Susan, writing ahead and scheduling posts is a great way to work… I do that sometimes too.
