The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Writers - Want To Earn More Money?

by Anne Wayman on July 23rd, 2008

moneyWant to earn more money for your freelance writing? Of course you do.

Peter Bowerman who, among other things, writes The Well-Fed Writer Blog has a great post with some very simple and easy to implement suggestions in a post called: Repeat After Me: “I Will Ask for More Money Next Time…”

And he’s absolutely right. Simply asking for more often gets more.

Like Peter, I’ve got stories… like the time instead of quoting a fee I asked “what’s your budget for this project?” It was exactly double the amount I was thinking of asking!

It isn’t always that easy. Often the potential client wants you to state a figure first… and I do; I just make it high. You can do the same thing… consider doubling your current hourly rate, or adding 25% - try it. You can always come down, but you can almost never go up.

Write well and often,

    Hi Anne,

Thanks for the blog plug! And yes, sometimes that’s all it takes. And as I just point out in a comment on the blog: “In my experience, if the client has money, their desire to get the job done competently and expeditiously the first time will always trump cost. They KNOW that you get what you pay for, and you don’t get what you don’t pay for, and they don’t have the time to screw around.” And of course, those are the kinds of clients we want to work with!

Hey Peter, you’re one of our favorite people here!

Actually, I think your whole article should be studied… even by those of us making a good living!
