I suspect many of you are like me. I started writing because I had some sort of a need to write. Somehow, maybe as early as sixth grade, I loved getting words on paper. It was probably around that time that the romance of being a writer began to creep in. Although I started reading […]

Sometimes I have to relearn lessons about my own successful freelance writing career. Way back in 2006 I wrote about tracking time… I even linked to a time tracking software that was, but is no longer, free.
Somewhere along the line, I stopped tracking my time. Since I tend to charge flat fees for projects, […]

Hi Anne,
I sold an article to a trade magazine. They published it a couple of months ago, but I haven’t been paid yet. How do I ask for payment without seeming tacky?

Hi cs,
What’s tacky about asking for what you’re owed? I’m still not at all sure why many writers seem to be embarrassed about […]

I came close to firing a client yesterday. It’s been a rocky relationship from the beginning, which was back in the beginning of February.
I’ve been ghostwriting for a number of years, and I have a rough process I’ve found usually works. It goes more or less like this:
First we do a Visioning which I do […]

Want to earn more money for your freelance writing? Of course you do.
Peter Bowerman who, among other things, writes The Well-Fed Writer Blog has a great post with some very simple and easy to implement suggestions in a post called: Repeat After Me: “I Will Ask for More Money Next Time…”

According to the article, the addendum may actually change author’s rights in favor of the publisher.
I don’t have a contract with Simon and Schuster […]

Pimpyourwork.com has a nifty quote from by Thomas Edison that notes the difference between being busy and actually working. It got me thinking about the issue.
I don’t know about you, but I can get so distracted by things that might be a good idea, but simply don’t need to be done, at least right […]

If I got everything my way, someone else would handle the business side of my freelance writing business… and probably do the marketing too. Or maybe not. Now that I’ve learned more about managing my money and have gotten mostly out of vagueness about my income and expense, it’s actually kinda fun keeping track of […]

I just got my new business cards. The image you see here is the front. It’s the second time I’ve used the earth-from-space image. The first time I tried it, I couldn’t find anything that really seemed to say writing with vision to me so I decided I wanted to remind people we live on […]

My printer has finally given up the ghost. It’s an HP PhotoSmart 2410 and I got it free because I became a beta tester for them. That was over five years ago, maybe more than six. I remember when they came to set up the test unit, and how I had to go to a […]
