Writers - Be SURE You Understand The Contracts You Sign

Publishers Weekly today announced that the Author’s Guild is warning Simon and Schuster authors to be extra careful when signing an addendum to their book contract that alters their ebook royalties.
According to the article, the addendum may actually change author’s rights in favor of the publisher.
I don’t have a contract with Simon and Schuster […]

Collecting What’s Owed You

A client sent me to a meeting and put me up overnight in a very nice hotel. When I checked in, they asked for my credit card, which I gave them. The next morning, when I looked at the invoice which had been slipped under my door, I confirmed that the billing address was my […]

Writing Clients - Keeping Your Sanity

My favorite writing client is the person who knows what they want written. I mean they know specifically both what they want to accomplish and how they want it done. If it’s a ghostwriting client, that means they know why they want to write a book, what they want the book to say, and maybe, […]

New Tag Line

This is taking chances month at the b5media.com business channel. We’ve been challenged to do something slightly differently. Hence my call for guest bloggers the other day. (And you’re still welcome to submit one, or two, or… )
I’ve also changed the tag line - no, not the one under the logo on top (more about […]

Your Schedule vs. The Client’s Schedule

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

You schedule phone meeting with a client that’s to last at least an hour.
You make sure nothing interferes, including putting off at least one other client.
The appointment is confirmed the day before.
The hour arrives and there’s no phone call.
25 minutes past the start of the call, you call […]

Two Guys and a Blog

Stumbled onto (into… what’s proper when speaking of a blog or a web page?) a blog called Men With Pens. Nifty blog about writing and life in general. There are sections on fiction writing, running a writing or other business, blogging, design and one called “Way off Topic.”
I particularly liked Are You Charging What You’re […]

When You Ghostwrite, Who Owns It?

I was poking around our Business Channel when I ran into WorkBoxers post called: Who Holds Rights To Commissioned Designs?
Mark strongly suggests designers make sure ownership rights for designs are spelled out in contracts. I do exactly the same thing in ghostwriting contracts. I make sure that my clients retain all the rights unless, for […]

Getting Off To A Good Start

When I’m ghostwriting a book for a client, probably the most important thing I do after getting clear on the client’s purpose for the book, is to get the first chapter right. Sometimes that means working the first couple of pages over and over again until the client is happy with the way I’m writing […]

The Flurry At Contract Signing

It seems every time I actually get to sign a ghostwriting contract there’s a flurry of additional activity that catches me by surprise.
First, there’s my, what, excitement? That always takes a few minutes and usually a call or two of celebration. Often this is followed by another few moments of “I can’t get this done” […]

How Much Should Freelance Writers Charge?

Setting rates is always a challenge. wordpreneur.com has an interesting approach. Blogger Eldon Sarte calls it a Profit Goal approach. To make his forumula work, you’ve got to know some things:

Your net goal for the year
The numbers of hours you’ll work for the year
Your weekly overhead

It’s simple to go from this information to an hourly […]
